Review: Dear John

Post by strainglia »

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

I have always wanted to read this book after I saw the movie and so...

The book is a little different from the movie when it comes to details. I love how it is a very easy read and how it touched my feelings and made me teary-eyed when John recounts the memories of his father the time he got sick and the time he died. Also it is very touching how John sold his father's coin collection to anonymously donate the money for Tim's (Savannah's husband) experimental medication. How sweet of a man he is!

In this novel I find Savannah weaker and confused more than they portrayed her in the movie. Her character is very annoying (I don't want to enumerate lots of instances) from the time John and she were together til she sent that selfish honest note til she strung John along while Tim was sick. So selfish.

I dont like Savannah at all or I expected more from the novel. However, it touched my heart a bit and it was an easy read and it tells you that true love meant, quote unquote, that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be.

I really enjoyed the book better than the movie, besides the fact that Channing Tatum was John :D. I agree that Savannah is very selfish. I understand completely the whole aspect of why she married Tim, but it looks like she could have stayed with John and they could have helped him together.

I absolutely agree with the initial statement of Savannah becoming an annoying character as the story goes on. I found this to deter my eagerness for reading the book as time went on! She really hit a nerve with me...

I felt I was able to connect with and understand John's feelings and life, and when looking back into the story, understanding he was alone in the world. This I think may have strung my feelings towards Savannah... I wish we had if even a hint at the end to him finding his own happiness!

On the whole a great read, totally agree with the above review.

Dear John is one of my favorite books. I don't usually cry while reading but this book made me shed tears in bucket loads. Sometimes I look at the moon and think about John and Savannah. The last scene of the book is etched in my memory.
