A Minor Happy Ending by Shaan Ranae is a New Adult romance
It’s the summer before college starts. Dyllan is dating Nick, who is the brother of her best friend Max. Jace is the irresistible new guy that has been giving Dyl goosebumps in all the right places. But he seems to be into Max, and Dyl is happy with Nick, until he starts talking about love. Worried about ruining her friendship and hurting Nick, she tries to stay away from Jace.
However Jace has made his feelings loud and clear, that Dyl is everything he wants and he won’t stop fighting for her. With Nick growing jealous, Dyl is starting to feel smothered and she finds herself caught between what is right and what is right for her.
Dyl finds it difficult to avoid Jace, since he is part of her circle of friends and is constantly hanging out at the diner where she works. One night he hangs behind and she offers him a ride home. Dyl isn’t sure how much longer she can resist those blue eyes that make her melt.
I am a huge fan of the New Adult genre, it has the best of both worlds, with young adult angst and full on steamy romance. This book didn’t disappoint with either. The story was really interesting and down to earth with a good mystery lurking. I really enjoyed reading it and trying to guess what would happen next. I also enjoyed the close relationship Dyl had with her mom, it was really nice to see they had an honest relationship.
That said, the book could use a really good edit. The beginning was just a dumping of character information, that made my head spin. The relationship between Dyl and Jace felt too forced, he seemed to be new to the group, but after the story develops more it shows that he has been pining for her for a long time. Also, I thought the character of Cam never really hit her bad girl high and became an afterthought too soon.
Despite needing an edit, underneath there is a really great story about choosing to take a chance on love. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good steamy New Adult novel. I would rate it a 2 out of 4 stars for now. After a good edit it could be a 3, maybe 4!
