Review: Angles - Part I by Erin Lockwood

When Sam attends his friend Teddy (the name used for most parts of the book)’s birthday party, he knows Teddy is trying to flaunt his success. After all, he has a good job, a kind fiancé and a loyal best friend. On the other hand, Sam just got divorced from Barbara. However, he plans on being the ‘bigger man’ and letting Teddy have his moment. When Cara, Teddy’s best friend enters the venue, she is a beautiful crying mess. She has every person’s attention (and interest), including Teddy and Sam. This time, Sam does not plan on being the ‘bigger man’. He plans on showing Cara that he is exactly what she needs, irrespective of what everyone else may think or want.

Cara keeps reminding herself that she has a boyfriend, Jason. No matter how attractive Sam may look, or how right it may feel to get lost in his eyes, she has to draw boundaries right? Even though Jason ‘does not light her fire’ and does not want any commitment, she should give him some time right? The main plot of the book revolves around how Cara deals with Sam’s advances, Teddy’s warnings and Jason’s reluctance.

While this is the first book in the series and the story moves ahead with the next book, there is a ‘temporary ending’ in the book and the reader can choose not to read the series further.

Cara was a typical romance heroine. She had fears because of past experiences and needed to be saved at times. While I was disappointed with a few decisions that she made, I liked her character. Since most parts of the book were told from her perspective, I could understand the reasoning behind her actions and could connect with her.

Sam was loyal, understanding and determined. The contrast between him and Jason was obvious, which made him very likable. On the other hand, Teddy was a character with shades of Grey. Without giving away spoilers, I can say that the reader’s feelings towards his character will change drastically through the book. There are a few secondary characters, whose personalities and stories have been touched upon in the book.

As a fan of the romance genre, I loved this book. It was a page turner and I wanted to finish reading it in one sitting. Further, I thought that the book was easy to follow and had a good pace. The author has described the characters’ feelings effectively and has dealt with the secondary characters well.

While the book seems professionally edited and formatted, I had one minor issue – the first few words (around 10 words) of every chapter were capitalized, following which, lower case letters began (midway through the sentence). While this seems deliberate, it distracted me.

I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading the story and could connect with the female protagonist. Apart from the capitalization, I had no concerns with the book. This is a clean romance book with no mature content. I would recommend this book to any fan of the romance genre, who is looking for a quick yet engrossing read.
