The Beginning: I Bet My Wife by Thomas Roberts is an erotica novella narrated in the first person perspective. William, a young singleton, finds himself in an unsatisfying job and an unfamiliar city. To fill the void left by his depressing work life, William resorts to exploring San Francisco’s nightlife. After an emotionally lacking relationship, a chance encounter one night leaves William feeling like he’s found the one. The chemistry between Kristen and William is intense and the two decide to marry. As their relationship progresses, the two open up about their wildest fantasies. Their risky exploration of these fantasies leads to a shocking bet between William and his dreadful boss. Will the bet forever damage William and Kristen’s marriage?
At only 55 pages, I Bet My Wife is a fairly quick read. The author skillfully moves the story along without leaving out interesting details. I was surprised upon finishing the story that William felt like a fully developed and sympathetic character. Further, though the book spans quite an amount of time, from the chance encounter of the couple through their wedding and beyond, it didn’t feel like any big pieces were missing. The author cleverly stuck to important events related to the story; for example, William’s distaste for his job and his boss are introduced early on and just enough detail is provided to hook the reader while mundane details that would ultimately slow down the pacing are expertly left out.
The most interesting aspect of this novella is the first person narrative perspective. Unlike most books in this genre, it was refreshing to read from a male point of view; I enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of William’s emotions and learning about his motives from such an intimate perspective. The author’s ability to put the reader in touch with William on a psychological level was engaging. The novella proved to be more than is typical of the genre as it contained an intriguing cerebral component.
The only fault I found with the story was the lack of development of William’s wife, Kristen. Much of the story focuses on Kristen and her wants and desires, yet she rarely felt like more than a prop. The limited length of the novella and the first person point of view both hindered Kristen’s development. I would have enjoyed a better connection to Kristen. Specifically, understanding her emotional transformation into a woman consumed by her unconventional sexual desires.
Though I wished for more insight into Kristen’s character, I Bet My Wife proved to be a fun, steamy read. As this novella is the first of a trilogy, I’m eager to continue the series and learn how the couple’s relationship evolves. The pacing, perspective, and cerebral element easily lead me to rate this novella 4 out of 4 stars. I Bet My Wife contains a great amount of adult content and thus should only be read by a mature audience. I recommend this book to any readers of erotica looking for a quick and steamy, yet psychological read.
