Review - Fighting to Win by Nicole Flockton
Julia, the protagonist, is preparing to compete in the Olympics. The last time she competed in a major event, she was falsely accused of bribing the judges. This time, she knows that she has to prove her talent to the world. At this point, she should not be thinking of her ex-boyfriend Mitch – the love of her life. When the scandal shook Julia’s life, she took advantage of a wrongly timed inappropriate photo involving her, to send Mitch away. She thought she was protecting Mitch and his sporting career by keeping him away from the backlash she faced after the scandal.
Now, it is time for Julia and Mitch to come face to face at the Olympics. How will they react when they see each other again? Will Julia tell Mitch the truth behind the photo? Will Julia be able to prove her talent and find the culprit behind the scandal?
I was a little skeptical when I began reading the book since I know very little about sports. I had assumed that I would be lost and confused for at least some parts of the book. However, I was amazed by how beautifully the author described the competitions. They were described in a manner that was easy to follow, created curiosity in the reader and never felt monotonous.
Julia and Mitch were realistic characters, who had their own flaws. I liked how both the characters were clever, strong and knew exactly what they wanted. The story is told mostly from Julia’s perspective, which allows the reader to understand her actions and decisions. I could connect with both the characters and found myself rooting for them throughout the book. All the secondary characters were relevant to the main plot and were handled well by the author.
The book is easy to read and understand. The author has used simple vocabulary and sentence structures. It has no technical jargon. According to me, the book has just the right amount of descriptions and follows a good pace. Overall, I think that the book is well written. In particular, I like how the author describes the characters’ feelings. I found a few minor editing issues, such as the use of “nature’s” instead of “natures” (referring to personality). I found no major grammatical or formatting issues.
I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has a strong plot with realistic characters. I was fully engrossed in the book and read it in one sitting. In particular, I was amazed by how the author dealt with the sports aspect of the book. Apart from the minor editing errors, I had no issues with this book.
Fighting to Win is a quick and sweet read. It has a ‘feel good’ factor to it and has very little drama. It has some mature content. I would recommend the book to adults who are fans of the romance genre and are looking for a quick and light-hearted read.
