How To Design A Duke By Eleanor Meyers
How To Design A Duke features Albion Kay IV, the Duke of Oakley and Lady Laura Abbey in Regency England. Laura, lowly born daughter of a seamstress, found her situation much improved when she married Lord Abbey. Married only a short time before Abbey's death, she's now the season's heiress hunting for a husband. The men are looking for wealth and will take her lowly birth if they must; while the ladies use cruelty and gossip to keep her in her place.
Albion Kay IV, the Duke of Oakley, known by the ton as a rake and seducer, takes Laura under his wing. From their first meeting, the attraction flared. Will they survive the ton, societies cruelties, and the Kings wrath for Oakley friend, Avery? Can Oakley change his spots and become a pillar of society, worthy of Laura's love or will society tear them apart?
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Although a Regency romance, How To Design A Duke also includes mystery. As a result you have all the ingredients for a sweet clean romance with a touch of mystery and intrigue. Meyers highlighted the inequity in social standings and the cruelty which came from those of a higher standing. In the same token, she demonstrated the backing of family solidly behind each other; and how instrumental family is to each member for support.
Creating characters which I found likeable and believable, the reader will love the lovable and hate the villains. The creation of Laura antagonist, well-developed and obnoxious, finds the readers ready for her downfall. What a character she created; ready to lie, cheat, or defraud as necessary to get her way. In comparison, Laura is sweet, strong, and loving; influencing the leopard to change his spots as he comes to know her.
Meyers created Oakley and Avery, with dark past and personalities; yet, also made them very human with wants and desires. Oakley's characterized as a rake and spoiler of women, changes as his attraction to Laura grows. Oakley is a better man than he or society thinks. Finally, in concluding my reviews for romance novel, How To Design A Duke, I found a solid Regency romance with well-developed characters and an intriguing entertaining plot. I found the pace of the book correct for the length of the novel with smooth transition from one scene to another. Meyers created an entertaining read without the use of fluff or sex to fill the pages.
