The Regency Romance Story
STORY-LINE THE TROUBLE WITH THESE GENTLEMEN BY JESSIE BENNETT:
Set in 1818, Regency England, The Trouble With These Gentlemen by Jessie Bennett's a wonderful Regency romance. Viscountess Anne Marie Wiltshire must marry before her 21st birthday to inherit her fortune. Finding no one suitable in London, Ann Marie and her companion Clara, traveled searching for a man Ann Marie could love. Unwilling to marry for title without love, Ann Marie finds herself in Bainbridge Village. Staying at the Fordham Hotel , Ann Marie meets James Ellingham, son of the proprietors of the hotel. James, without title or wealth, immediately catches Ann Marie's eye; the feeling is mutual.
But will Marie throw away a fortune for love? What a decision she must make! Security with a wealthy titled gentleman or love with a poor country gentleman. My Regency romance book review of the Trouble With These Gentlemen follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Jessie Bennett crafted a fine Regency romance which includes mystery. The first book in a new series, The Bainbridge Love and Challenges Series, I found this book an enjoyable and entertaining read. Giving Anne Marie a firm belief in love and marriage, she was unwilling to settle for anything less. Anne Marie sees beyond social status; she wants a strong good man who loves her, rather than a cold title. A strong determined heroine, Anne Marie, also treated her companion as a friend rather than a servant. Servants during this time period, considered inferior lower class, were ignored by the nobility; they saw them as undeserving of respect and care. Adding in the rivalry for James between Ann Marie and Clara, added an extra element to this romance, as well as, the many candidates available in this small village.
Bennett added mystery to this romance. Someone's causing havoc in the village. Destroyed and damages shops devastate the owners. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall live in Bainbridge; ahead their time in their belief of helping and encouraging the villagers when disasters strike. Most nobility of this period gave no thought to the lower classes. Then Bennett added the mysterious flowers appearing in Anne Marie's bedroom. Who was entering her chambers and leaving them?
Bennett included a varied cast of characters, from the obnoxious Earl, to the snobby Lady Melanie, and the handsome Cornwall brothers. Some you will love and others you will love to hate. I found The Trouble With These Gentlemen an entertaining read perfect for a lazy weekend. With many plots lines, well-developed characters, and an intriguing story-line, I enjoyed my time spent in Bainbridge.
THE TROUBLE WITH THESE GENTLEMEN RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
This is a clean sweet Regency romance which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Regency romances with mystery, as well as, strong heroines and heroes who believe in love rather than social standing and titles, .
