[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Robot: A Deadly Love Story" by Cathy Parker.]
Cassie works as a car mechanic, where she succeeds greatly due to a secret she holds. She can learn what is wrong with a machine just by touching it. This allows her to detect and diagnose issues quickly. Her true passion, however, is robotics. When she is granted the opportunity to work on Sam, the most advanced robot, she is ecstatic. However, her dream job turns into a nightmare when her boss threatens everyone she loves. If Cassie steps out of line, her aging mother and boyfriend will face the consequences. Sam is also developing feelings for Cassie. Will she be able to escape without her world being torn apart? Check out Robot: A Deadly Love Story by Cathy Parker to find out!
The mix of genres in this book kept me engaged. Beyond being a romance, there were elements of thriller and science-fiction. The high stakes were apparent from the prologue, which featured Cassie, a gun, and a debate over who to call. This set the stage for the fast-paced novel that followed. The sci-fi elements make their appearance through Sam, the human-like robot. His advanced AI is a terrifying look into what could be a near future, given the growing presence of AI in society.
Along with the fast-paced plot, Cassie is a compelling protagonist. She is a girl with a dream who soon learns it is too good to be true. The cracks in her relationship with her boyfriend, Alex, are put under immense pressure because of her new job. Seeing whether the pair can overcome these was fascinating. She is easy to root for as it seems as though her whole life is falling apart.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited; I didn't notice any errors in the book. There was nothing that I disliked about it. It would appeal to fans of thriller, science fiction, and romance. There is a depiction of an attempted rape, so sensitive readers might not want to read this book. If you are looking for a thrilling book, I highly suggest Robot: A Deadly Love Story!
