Divergent by Veronica Roth

Post by hayleyb1 »

“Divergent” is the first book in a series about a utopian society in the future of the United States, in which a large war caused society to separate into five factions based on what personal characteristics caused the war (greed, lies, selfishness, etc.). The main character, Beatrice, feels out of place and insufficient for her birth faction when choosing day comes and she must choose for the rest of her life which faction she would rather be a member of. She has found out from an assessment that she is already different and when her brother betrays their faction for the “enemy,” it give Beatrice the courage and the push needed to choose Dauntless, the sometimes crazy but always brave faction.

In a time period with so many futuristic, dystopian/utopian societies dreamt up, this book stands apart from the others because of the emotions and risks that the characters experience as well as the reasons for the new war. Veronica Roth captured the essence and judgment of human character that we are always so guilty of in today’s culture. I thoroughly enjoyed this first book and read it in only a day. I am now looking forward to starting the second book as soon as this is posted…
