Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Post by lhtownse »

This first book in Roth's trilogy was fantastic. Equal parts action, drama, and human relationships made it an enthralling read the whole way through. I found myself worried about what I would do when I finished the trilogy when I was only halfway through the first book.

Tris is a compelling protagonist. She is stubborn, caring, strong, and flawed. Roth does a great job of realistically and engagingly capturing the struggle of a young person at a pivotal point in her life; the way friendships, love, and familial relationships develop and crumble; and the elation and heartbreak of people noticing sameness and difference in each other.

Lovers of young adult, dystopian fiction, and anyone who can appreciate skillful character development will appreciate this book. I listened to the audiobook version, which was masterfully done. This book is intriguing and quick-paced enough to make a good audio adaptation and Emma Galvin is the perfect narrator.
