Re: The Hunger Games Series vs. Divergent Series

Post by amybo82 »

I'm terrible at reading series. I often read one or two of the books then I move on to something else, and I just never go back! I read the first two of The Hunger Games and the first two of Divergent, and I've just not had the desire to go back and read the third of either series. From what I've read, though, I liked Divergent better. I thought Tris was less whiny than Katniss. I also liked the action better in Divergent.

i read and enjoyed both series, divergent more than hunger games. the hunger games i think by the last one it was really rushed, people died and i didn't realise for another few pages because they were given half a sentence. divergent i think wasn't as good as the 1st hunger games but was consistently better over all,

also, lots of people complain about how repetitive these kinds of books are, and there are a lot of these dystopian YA books all in the same mould, but for me if it's well written i enjoy it. as well as these 2 i've read quite a few other series of this type, loved the testing by joelle charbonneau which is v similar but others i've not enjoyed so much.

Firstly, if we had all read divergent first (many people seem to have read thg first because of the movies) opinions would be different because the comparison would be the other way around. However, I think the story line behind divergent could have developed more, but it was creative and interesting. The ideas, especially in insurgent, were obviously well thought out, but I preferred the writing style of Collins. If they took the characters from THG and put them in Divergent, that would be something.

I haven't actually gotten around to reading the hunger games series yet (sorry). But the Divergent series is fantastic.

I have yet to read either of these series and have only seen the two Hunger Games movies. I was just wondering if the movies were in any way close to the books in either series. I did enjoy the two movies that I saw, so based on what has happened in the past, I would probably like the books as well.

My vote has to go to the divergent series, I have read both of these series a few times, and I did enjoy them both. but something just enticed me more with the divergent books, perhaps it is because I saw the hunger games movie before I read the book and so I kind of already knew what to expect from the book, while with divergent it was the other way around with reading the books first, so I found myself being drawn into it more.

I've read both series, but I prefer the Hunger Games. The Divergent series got a little weird for me at the end. It just felt like too much happened, and it's irritating when authors introduce new characters near the end of a series.

If only comparing the first Hunger games to Divergent alone I would personally say that The Hunger Games has the edge because of the depth if the world Collins has created. However I felt that the Hunger Games felt like it was intended to stop there so the rest of the series feels hurriedly put together in an attempt to mimic her original success. In Divergent however Roth has a clear plan that beautifully builds to the end of the third book which to me makes it a stronger and more compelling series.

I have read both series and enjoyed them as well. When I moved I gave the Divergent Series to my brother and my Hunger Games series to a coworker (a fellow booknerd) who has never read it yet but wanted too.
I personally prefer Hunger Games over Divergent.
While both have the same idea and the same concept.... Divergent just couldn't beat Hunger Games

Well, my personal opinion is that the Hunger Games series are slightly better. Collins came up with a spectacular main storyline and the setting of the book is also well thought and could be real, if we forget about the fact that she didn't mention what is the world outside Panem like.
But this is the issue I noticed in Divergent, too. As far as I recall (it's been a long time since I read the books), they live kind of trapped in a city, but there are also people living beyond the fence. And the idea of factions is good, but not great. If you do some simple math, you find out that there would have to be far more factionless people than those in factions.
So, to summarize it, I prefer THG. It just makes more sense to me, if that's something I can say about a fiction.

I love both of them, but Divergent is my favorite of the two. I had a hard time liking Katniss, and felt more connected to Tris. Katniss' character is a little cold, to me, since she is so set on nothing but survival of herself and those she loves. Tris was much more selfish, as she herself mentions many times in the book.

I think both series are great in their own way. THG is my personal favourite of the two, based on Collins writing style of it, it's well thought out and well written she didn't "Hollywood" it, characters that we love were killed off, she keeps it "realistic" [realistic to the story line anyways]. Katniss is a great main character for people to relate with as are the relationships in the book.
Divergent took a turn *Spoiler Alert* that I did not see coming to be honest. It was creative and very well thought out, I liked it a lot.

You can compare the two books all you want but I think both were written very separate from the other, the similarities are coincidence, I've heard people day they were copied, but honestly, this type of post-apocalyptic plot is very common and very attractive to a lot of readers. As is the plot of revolutions and over-throwing government control. Great books.

Personally, I loved the Hunger Games a lot more. The premise for Divergent was very interesting but I don't think I connected very much to the characters except for Tris. With the Hunger Games, I loved all of them and they were very distinct with their voices. While both books didn't have a amazing end for me, I personally liked the ending of Mockingjay better than Allegiant. I liked the Hunger Games overall!!! :D :D
