Review of The Secret Behind the House
Zozo is particularly curious to know why her parents do not want her to go to the back of their house. So far, both her mom and her dad have given her reasons why she shouldn't go there, but their points are contradictory, and one of the reasons didn't even make sense to her. So, one day, she overhears her parents discussing her insistance on going to the backyard and the secret there. Now, Zozo is more than curious to visit the back of the house and explore whatever secret, mystery, or surprise therein, and she immediately calls her best friend Lid to inform her about the development.
Eventually, Zozo goes to the back of their house to satisfy her curiosity. But she soon finds out the adventure won't be any easy, as there are many challenges and risks involved. Is Zozo actually prepared for whatever might come out of this adventure? What if she's forever stuck in The Only Secret is CARDO?
The Secret Behind the House by Maya Rawashdeh is a well-crafted children's story with interesting elements of mystery and suspense. Like Zozo, I was also curious to know what could be going on behind the house that made her parents come up with those funny explanations and excuses. Reading about the challenge of unlocking the door, the magic that happened after the red button was pushed, the directive on how to find the key, the presence of the robot, and the teleportation that occurs in the portal all excited me, and I couldn't wait to know where all these will be leading to.
This is a literary commentary on the inquisitive nature of children and how far they can go when they sense something is being hidden from them or that they've been lied to. Following this, I think the story teaches the importance of being honest with our kids. It is necessary we address their concerns and answer their questions in the most healthy way possible. When it's extremely dangerous to allow them to gain knowledge of certain things, it is important to have a soul-to-soul conversation about that, giving them honest reasons as to why they can't be informed about such things—never to lie about that. Why? Trust is very essential in a child-parent relationship, and once broken, it might never be redeemed. Worse still, this situation might expose the kids to more harm when they try to do things their own way.
The paintings are bright, and I appreciate the depth they added to the story. This book receives 5 out of 5 stars for the captivating narrative, impactful lessons, and the thorough proofreading. The Secret Behind the House by Maya Rawashdeh is a suitable read for every child. I didn't dislike anything in it.
