Review of Kanana Tanana . . . and the Pie Recipe
Kanana Tanana . . . and the Pie Recipe by Karen Meyer is a delightful children’s book about a girl named Kanana Tanana and her search for the elusive Zanana pie recipe. Kanana Tanana has tasted this delicious pie with bananas, but no one seems to know how to prepare it. She asks Manana Fanana, but her answer is apparently unsatisfactory. She almost finds the recipe but ends up losing it again. Will Kanana Tanana eventually find the recipe again? Grab a copy of this book to find out.
As you must have already guessed, this book has many words that rhyme with banana. I imagine it will elicit a lot of giggles and laughter from the intended audience. What I found most captivating were the stunning illustrations. Matt Philleo did a splendid job of making each character look so realistic and colorful that it will keep the child absorbed in the book and help develop their imaginative mind. Each character’s emotions and behaviors also play a crucial role in the story and will be a teaching moment parents can use.
Karen Meyer has used her experience as a preschool teacher, which led to the creation of this unique story. This visually appealing book starts with questions that help the little one engage with the story. They are excellent conversation starters to get curious minds working and have them present their opinions. The book teaches children the importance of embracing life even when you don’t have all the answers. The poem at the end will make the story even more memorable. The culmination of Kanana Tanana’s quest also lays the foundation for her next book with Kanana Tanana on a new mission.
I don’t have any complaints except for the missing page numbers. It certainly did not affect my reading, but the author can change this to improve the book. I believe that children under 6 years will enjoy this story and will look forward to the sequel. With nothing to detract from the overall enjoyment of this book, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
Kanana Tanana . . . and the Pie Recipe will make an excellent gift for toddlers and preschoolers. Teachers and parents can use this book to engage and get their children’s imaginations to lead to entertaining discussions. Grab a copy of this book to join Kanana Tanana in her fun adventure.
