The story is well-written and suitable for upper middle-grade readers ages eight to fourteen. The focus is on Lea's transformation over the summer, as she works through her differences and gets to know her aunt. The author weaves in historical fiction that is both educational and exciting, making the story both educational and exciting.
The author uses Lea's struggle with change to paint a beautiful picture of what it means to grow up and adjust to the unexpected nature of life. The story demonstrates Lea's struggle between childhood and adulthood, expressing a range of emotions that are spot-on for the target audience to relate to. The author creates perfect scenes that allow imagination to roam free, such as horseback riding, an abandoned mission, using a metal detector to find buried treasure, and exploring a life-size model ship.
SandPeople is a middle-grade fiction that allows readers to dive into the mystery of the past, imagine the possibilities, and put themselves into the search for answers. The book is well-edited, contains no swearing or age-inappropriate content, and is well-suited to its target audience. The book is rated 4 out of 4 stars, as it is relatable, honest, and demonstrates Lea's progression through change.
The book is an excellent middle-grade read that appeals to anyone looking for an escape from loneliness or dealing with circumstances that feel out of their control. It is recommended for young readers feeling torn between childhood and adulthood, as it contains an excellent story for easing the transition and encouraging growth.

Great to hear since this book’s target audience would be those around Lea’s age going through similar experiences and challenges. The story does not focus on Lea's parents and whether they will get back together; instead, the focus is on Lea and her transformation over the summer.
Congrats to the author on BOTD! Nice to have a book with a solid female protagonist to kick off National Women’s Month!
