[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "No Sense Christmas Poems for Children" by MJ Cousins.]
No Sense Christmas Poems for Children, written by M.J. Cousins, is a collection of twenty-five Christmas-themed poems that also doubles as a medium for inculcating in children the necessary positive values and healthy perceptions they need to grow up with. There is an illustration just after each title and a dedication text that all add to the book's depth and impact.
There are several positive values to learn from this poetic piece, and I do appreciate how Cousins garnished them with the Christmas stories; her approach created a fun learning experience. I was most impressed with the demonstration of the power of a resilient, confident mind, as is seen in the story of the dog who aspired to join Santa's crew. I considered its message a timely intervention, looking at the hostility in the world and the inclinations for external validation.
Cousins also did well with her word choices; this and the chosen free verse format ensured a simple, uninterrupted reading. I liked the creativity that went into the development of various themes in this book, like the conception of the incident that brought about the transformation of "Bert Kinder" to "Be Kind." Also, by dedicating each title to exceptional figures and worthy causes, I thought the author was directing children to emulate such values.
The elements of humor were notable; likewise, the suspense sprinkled here and there, like in poem number twenty-four. The two poems attached as bonuses after the twenty-fifth poem should satisfy the thirst of anyone desiring more of these intriguing collections; well, like Oliver Twist, I wanted more and more and didn't want it to end—only an exceptional piece of literature can get one feeling this way!
I didn't find any serious issues in this book; however, I suggest another round of editing for it, given some obvious grammatical and typographical mistakes in it, which I don't think should be excused under poetic license. I am delighted to rate this book five out of five stars for the simple, gripping narratives and the positive values they preach. There is no reason to lower the rating. Readers aged four to eleven or anyone interested in reading well-written, didactic Christmas stories should have a great time with this book.
