Review of The Get Better Center

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Get Better Center" by Weldon.]
“The Get Better Centre” by Weldon is a book for children designed to introduce the people you will meet in a hospital. The book prepares young readers about the different roles of staff in a healthcare environment.
A young person goes to “The Get Better Centre” and asks everyone they encounter if they are a nurse. Several different staff members with different roles introduce themselves and describe how they help to make people better. The medical facility hosts an array of friendly staff members, all with specialised skills. The staff are there to give the best care before their patients are well enough to go home.
The book is simple and offers no character names. The only descriptions are of hospital staff personnel and their duties. The book follows a visit to a hospital for a procedure and outlines what different staff do during this time. Unfortunately, there is no creative storytelling to excite and stimulate a young reader. The book has no other purpose than to educate.
The illustrations are bright, colourful, and appealing. The drawings add some fun to the book. Each image is large and helps display the journey through the hospital in a visual form. The appearance of the staff is charming and friendly, capturing the warmth of a healthcare provider. I found the artwork to be more imaginative than the text.
I found the short descriptions of different healthcare workers informative for children. A visit to the hospital can be scary and overwhelming for children, and this book offers some preparation beforehand. At the end of the story, there is a more comprehensive list of definitions of the roles mentioned. This list can provide an opportunity for additional discussion and a proactive approach to an upcoming hospital visit.
The book is professionally edited, and I liked the format. I enjoyed the large illustrations as they brought warmth to the book. The information in the book is beneficial for young children, and I appreciate the value of preparing a child for a hospital visit. I didn’t find the book particularly stimulating as there is no creative story or interesting characters. I think the characters should have names. I think personalising the characters would have improved the book. With all things considered, I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars.
