[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Alfie's Attack" by David Bohline.]
Alfie is a brave and talented fish, but he has one major problem: he is asthmatic. This has caused him a whole lot of inconvenience, including difficulty breathing during the episode. But when Alfie drifts away from his usual abode in the deep sea and encounters a shark excited by a ready meal, there is a surprise for both the prey and the predator, and beyond this, an opportunity to learn some essential lessons about life and living and tips about asthma and its management.
Alfie's Attack! The Story of a Fish with Asthma is a children's story written by David Bohline. Asthma is one of the common health challenges faced by children. So I was really impressed by the author's use of a story to create awareness about this issue and provide measures for its management. This is mainly achieved through the incidents surrounding the life of the character Alfie, his encounter with a shark and the following development, and the intervention of the health professional, D'Octopus.
Concerning the awareness about asthma, there is a comprehensive note about this health condition, the statistics on the sufferers (including the age range), the possible cause, and the factors that can trigger its occurrence if the sufferers are exposed to them, among others. On the measures for its management, there are tips provided in the scenes "Alfie's Rescue" and "D'Octopus," and then a whole bulk of information in the "What to do" section of the "Notes to Parents." I found these really informative and impactful.
The story also highlights some essential lessons worth emulating, such as that seen in Alfie's response when things turned against his predator and the results this singular act produced. The illustrations appealed to me in a great way, and the error-free text gave me a memorable reading experience. I don't think there's anything that could have been done to make this work better. Alfie's Attack! The Story of a Fish with Asthma earns five out of five stars for its wealth of information about asthma and its management and for presenting the same in an accessible manner. This book is a suitable read for every child and for parents and caregivers with children suffering from asthma.
