[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Batty Wings" by Marlene Rattigan.]
The two children have a grandmother unlike any other. Their Nanna is a bat at night, flapping her wings and roaming around the house! The night holds wonderful adventures for Nanna to share, and her grandchildren marvel at all of them. Batty Wings by Marlene Rattigan is a charming children’s story featuring a grandmother who recounts her nighttime adventures as a flying bat to her bright-eyed grandchildren.
The first thing to admire about the book is the illustrations. Sergio Drumond did an excellent job capturing the colorful and dynamic scenarios in the story. Moreover, the characters aren’t merely superimposed on the background; instead, they exhibit animated actions and expressive facial expressions, making the illustrations visually appealing. With both the text and illustrations contributing equally to the narrative, the story becomes captivating and easy to follow. What I appreciate most about the story is its simplicity. There is no significant moral lesson imposed on the reader—just a straightforward adventure tale meant to be enjoyed. Stories like this, which feature a simple yet magical adventure, make for an easy and enjoyable read for young readers, as they avoid complex language and lengthy paragraphs. I also noticed that the writing is rich in short but lively dialogues, sparing the reader from elaborate paragraphs and making the book ideal for reading aloud.
Overall, this book is a delightful read, featuring an engaging and imaginative premise that captures the reader’s interest from the start. The colorful illustrations add a vibrant touch, and the dialogue-heavy writing makes the story accessible and enjoyable. Additionally, the book has been flawlessly edited, and I have no dislikes about it. Given all these qualities, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It offers a simple narrative that young readers who are just beginning to explore reading can easily enjoy.
