Review of The Adventures of Thomas in Hopi Land
Thomas Polywetewa is fun to be with, benevolent, and hardworking. He is well liked by the rest of the children in school, and they think he is special. However, Thomas's teacher, Lottie Kissinger, thinks otherwise and particularly seems to dislike him. But is Thomas actually special? Will his teacher's cold attitude towards him have any impact on his life? Well, we have to look into the adventure that brought Thomas and one loyal, brave mouse named Tusan together, the events that followed after this encounter, Thomas's time learning the history and culture of the Hopi people, and his involvement with the Hopi ceremonies.
The Adventures of Thomas in Hopi Land is a children's story written by Patrick Dallabetta. It brings the readers into the life of a little boy who, despite the negative energy from his class teacher and the frustration of being relegated to a lonely little room, rose to build for himself a wall of loyal friendship and heavily involved himself with the affairs of his people, much to the admiration of his grandfather, "Trapa" Jimmy, the Hopi people, and even the visiting former US leader, President Teddy.
Partially based on a Hopi story written by Edward Kennard, The Adventures of Thomas in Hopi Land goes beyond the life and aspirations of our main character, Thomas, to explore some essential aspects of Hopi history and culture. Among other things, readers will learn about the various clans in Hopi Land, the snake dance ceremony, the Hopi people's belief in Katsinas, the significance of eagles in Hopi culture, and the most prized possession of the Mishongnovi people.
I enjoyed reading about the great relationship between Thomas and his best mouse friend, Tusan. What amazed me the most was Tusan's bravery and willingness to help the Mishongnovi villagers put an end to the loss caused by the rampaging hawk. It was an emotional and suspenseful moment for me, as I appreciated Tusan's selflessness and worried about his encounter with the obviously advantaged hawk.
There's one suggestion I would like to make. I think the scene where Trapa offered Thomas and his mouse friend Tusan a pipe to smoke is unhealthy content for children's consumption. I've always believed that children's books should be made as safe as possible, considering that their young minds are easily impressionable. So, I would suggest that section be removed in a subsequent edition.
Overall, I had a great time with this book, and I am delighted to rate it five out of five stars for the rich historical and cultural content, the captivating narrative, and the bright illustrations. I don't think the above concern is worth removing a star far. I recommend The Adventures of Thomas in Hopi Land to readers between the ages of four and twelve.
