Review of Sammy the Fox
“Sammy the Fox” is a book for kids written by Mari Steyn. This book has a target audience of young kids and aims to teach valuable lessons about relating with people. As kids interact with one another every day, some might hurt others, and knowing how to handle such situations properly is the main aim of this book.
This was a book for children, so the author ensured that the narrative made use of colorful illustrations. This approach is common and widely used for similar books because it functions as a perfect way to retain the attention of kids. Additionally, this tactic makes the whole story easier to comprehend. Pictures usually speak louder than words, and this is one such instance. The parts of the narrative that may seem blurry would be perfectly represented using pictures. I appreciate this level of concern in this book and understand how it can help the target audience employ proper use of the book.
I also enjoyed the fact that Sammy’s story in this book highlighted really important aspects of interaction with people we trust. Oscar, Sammy’s best friend, found Sammy looking very sad and took it upon himself to try and make him feel better. It showed how Oscar cared deeply for his friend and showed that through his selfless actions. Sammy, on the other hand, trusted Oscar and told him what was making him really sad. This interaction shows how important it is for friends to confide in each other and also shows that empathy is important in any social interaction. These concepts were clearly stated, and with a proper understanding, I am sure that valuable lessons would be learned.
I found no errors while reading and commend the editing team for a good job in that regard. The only aspect I thought needed improvement was the part where Oscar said nice things to cheer Sammy up. I thought that part was too wordy and would be difficult for younger kids to understand, especially when reading alone. This aspect would benefit from much simpler phrasing and maybe relatable examples for maximum comprehension.
Even though this book had a minor drawback, I don't think it is worth deducting points for. As a result, I rate “Sammy the Fox” 5 out of 5 stars. It had a really important message that was properly passed across, and I enjoyed the illustrations. Kids who are 8 and above could enjoy this book reading alone, but for the younger kids, it would be better with an adult for proper explanation of the slightly complex concepts.
