The Christmas Eve Blizzard by Scott Withers is a charming children’s book, full of colorful illustrations and captivating knowledge that any child is sure to enjoy. I rate this short book a 4 out of 5.
 
I read this enchanting book to my six-year-old niece, and she immediately loved Cane the Weather Dog! He is the main character; a little brown and white dog that loves his daddy, his Grandma Cindy, and his wildlife friends. Cane’s daddy is a meteorologist, so he tracks the weather and reports it for TV. On Christmas Eve they head to Grandma Cindy’s house, but soon after arriving they find themselves trapped in a dangerous blizzard. Although Cane is afraid of the scary storm at first, he stays brave and courageous in the face of the blizzard in order to help his animal friends and ultimately, Santa Claus.
 
Something we both enjoyed about this sweet story was how educational it was; my niece learned so many new words and I got to happily explain each one to her. Since this book is for children from preschool to the third grade, I thought the author did an outstanding job incorporating something for every age group to learn and enjoy. The vocabulary was not too advanced, but still exceptional enough to teach kids exciting new words and phrases. There is even a list of “Cane’s Weather Words” at the end of the book, so readers can review some of the new words they learned. In my opinion, this was a very thoughtful and delightful addition to the book.
 
There are very little criticisms I have about The Christmas Eve Blizzard. I found one small grammar issue, which was just an unnecessary spacing between words. The only other criticism I have, was that I noticed an inconsistency with naming. “Daddy” is usually capitalized like a name because that is the only name assigned to the character of Cane’s dad. However, I found a few instances where it wasn’t capitalized, and it was inconsistent with the rest of the story. This left me wondering if it should be Capital like a name, or not. If not, the author would need to go through and take away the capitalization in some instances.
 
Overall, I enjoyed The Christmas Eve Blizzard by Scott Withers and thought the whimsical story was extremely clever and charming. I would suggest this book for every child, because it is fun yet educational, and it could make a fantastic Christmas gift.
