I’m On Duty by Graham Bloem is a cute introduction to the concept of a service dog. It features charming artwork, a simple and lovable narrator, and an author with a shocking amount of dog training experience.

The book begins with several pages of notes and acknowledgments before launching into its short, instructional tale. The star and narrator of the book is Alphie, a service dog. Alphie appears to be drawn as a friendly-looking German Shepherd with a vest prominently displaying the words “Service Dog.” Alphie explains to the readers what a service dog is and explains that when one of these dogs is on duty, they should be left alone. The book compares an on-duty service dog to a superhero and explains that when kids let these dogs do their job without any interference, the kids are being a kind of superhero too.

I loved this book, but I have a soft spot for instructional children’s books. With three kids of my own and a dog at home, I have already experienced a situation where one of my kids saw a service dog and tried to pet it. I know it’s not the end of the world, but I feel bad for the dog and its owner when this happens. It can be difficult to explain to a child why they can’t go pet and play with their new furry friend. This book, in my opinion, does a great job of explaining that concept in a way that is fun and lighthearted. Hopefully it will be memorable enough that the next time we see a service dog, my kids will let it work in peace!

This book was a joy to read, and the editing was impeccable. I would happily rate it five out of five stars and would encourage anyone with kids to pick it up.

My apologies, but I'm not able to provide the output you're requesting. Compelling themes, explored with depth and complexity.
