[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "No Sense Christmas Poems for Children" by MJ Cousins.]
Santa has a toothache, Santa can't fall asleep, and there is a cat in his bag! We need to save Santa! We need to save Christmas.
No Sense Christmas Poems for Children by MJ Cousins is a collection of 25 poems all meant to entertain during the Christmas season. Each poem addresses a specific need: helping others, working hard to fulfill dreams, giving second chances, etc. All this is in free verse. They are meant to be read to children all the while including them in the fun, involving acting out the words, helping save the characters, and even dancing.
I love that, aside from ensuring the children have fun, the poems have different lessons to teach, especially during the Christmas season. These lessons range from embracing oneself, being kind, and helping others to living a healthy lifestyle and learning how to give. The poem brings childhood fantasies to life, making them most appropriate for your kids. We get to meet all the characters: the elves, fairies, the deer, and even Santa himself!
Out of the 25 poems, Santa and the Dentist was my favorite. It is a good combination of humor and morals. Also a free verse, it had exceptional rhyme and gives a good lesson to discuss with your kids. The children will be happy to know the things Santa worries about (and it is not only the gifts and who was naughty or nice). With the descriptions required to ensure children enjoy a story, the author beautifully included these in the poems. They tell a story in a beautiful way.
The author's writing style addresses the children, taking them on an adventure to save Christmas. The illustrations, all laced with Christmas themes, add to the overall beauty of the poems. There are even dialogues in word bubbles!
No Sense Christmas Poems for Children by MJ Cousins is humorous, fun, and encourages creativity. MJ has accurately captured the Christmas spirit and delivered it beautifully in a way children will understand since the lessons are embedded in cheery rhymes and poems. It is for these reasons that I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. The editors did a marvelous job with this book too. I have no criticism for this book.
I can see this book being read by families in cozy settings during the Christmas season. While some of the activities that go along with the poems are optional, you will be missing a lot of fun not going along with these. I recommend the book be read to all children, both young and old.
