Have you ever been lucky to escape a perilous situation in which your life was at risk? Have you ever wondered how people survived situations that you found to be unbearable? Do you believe in guardian angels? Do you know any children who would benefit from believing in guardian angels? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will enjoy reading … She Had Wings by Audrey Carnegie.

In this collection of short stories, problematic situations, which are common to young people and their significant others, were presented. In each story, a situation was explained, a dysfunctional behavior was highlighted, and a guardian angel came to the rescue.

A guardian angel is believed, by many, to be assigned the task of protecting and guiding people. A guardian angel could be a spiritual being or a human. The author, Audrey Carnegie, presented a guardian angel as a spiritual being, who could only be seen by the person they were helping.

Throughout the book, various themes were examined ranging from a deaf little boy having difficulty communicating with his family to a 16-year-old boy who lied to a social worker about his needs at home.

My favorite story was about a little girl who got a chance to play football on a local boys’ team.

Each story led me to believe that things turn out for the best if one follows one’s conscience, maintains a positive attitude, and is courageous. For example, in “The Ernest Footballer,” Timothy resorted to pinching his baby brother to make him cry, thereby forcing his parents to get up earlier. This was his strategy to get to football practice on time and have a better chance of getting into the lineup for the next game. However, this plan caused a chain of events that prevented him from being in the lineup. His guardian angel gave him advice that would improve his odds of being in a future lineup.

I liked the solutions the guardian angel employed to help the young people solve their problems. These could be helpful and comforting to anyone experiencing a difficult situation. I enjoyed the magic found in each story. However, there were some shortcomings. I came across many grammar errors as I was reading. Also, paragraphs were not consistently used to separate the dialogue lines between characters. This made it difficult to follow who was saying what. I suggest that the author gets this delightful book professionally edited.
For the above reasons, I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Hi, Stephen. Happy New Year! To answer your question, it is best that this book be read together. The wisdom of the adult and the smarts of the child would blend for good discussions.

I do believe that the universe has your back, so everything, good or bad, happens for a reason! The concept of guardian angels seems similar, wherein your instinct or the conscious inner self guides, directs and course-corrects you. I'd look forward to reading this book. What age group would you recommend this to, for children/young adults?

Hi, Neha. Happy New Year. I recommend this book for children aged 10 years and up. A younger child might enjoy this book if it is read to them by an adult.

This sounds like a very interesting collection of short stories. I would be interested in reading it after it goes through another round of editing to address the issues you mentioned.

There are concerns and there are ways to deal with them and everyone needs a bit of hand holding and a direction too. The thought that there is someone looking out for each one of us is beautiful. This sounds like a cute story. The idea of guardian angels is an intriguing one. Though, I am not a huge fan of short story collections, so this is not entirely up my ally.
