Review of The Angry Vacuum:
Written by an amazing eight-year-old, Jomo Jesus Thomas Suriel, and Jomo Gamal Thomas, The Angry Vacuum is a fantastic addition to any home or school library’s emotional intelligence collection. Through the characters of Sid the Super Happy Kid and his sister, Laura the Emotions Explorer, the author takes the reader on vacation to space camp near the International Space Station. While relaxing on their ship, Solar Enterprise, Sid and Laura notice a brewing disturbance in the galaxy. Using their Emotion Map Touchscreen and GPS, Sid and Laura key in on an anger hotspot. The closer they get, the worse the hotspot is. Will they arrive in time to prevent an angry eruption? Or will the anger explode?
I love that Jomo Jesus Thomas Suriel and Jomo Gamal Thomas are writing books about emotions and emotional intelligence for other children. Who better to write books geared for younger children than a child who has experienced those same emotions? This story is a fun way to learn about anger, some of the things that can cause it to build, and how to diffuse it. The idea that we must work together to calm and tame anger is a valuable lesson…even for adults. Too often, we expect children to regulate strong emotions alone. The author shows us that working together can provide far better results than trying to do it alone. Plus, who doesn’t want to read about robots and space?! My children didn’t even realize this was an emotional intelligence book until near the end. They were just enjoying the story and traveling through space with Sid and Laura!
I hope that Jomo Jesus Thomas Suriel continues to write his emotional intelligence series. We need more books like this in the world! I look forward to seeing what this young author’s future holds. I think we can expect excellent things from him!
Children of all ages will enjoy this book! It's a fun read, and there was nothing my children or I disliked about the story. There are a few typo issues and grammatical mistakes (less than 5) that led to the loss of a star, but The Angry Vacuum is still a very solid 4 out of 5 stars and worth a read!
