I enjoyed reading the book, Biscuit’s Biggest Adventure! by Coleen Carlile. It is a beautifully illustrated, heartwarming children’s book about a boy and his elderly dog. The author has a true gift for crafting a touching and inspiring view of a person's or pet’s life after death. I think it will appeal to parents of children of all ages due to its thoughtful approach to an inevitable event.
While reading about Freddy, the young boy, and his dog, Biscuit, I found it very relatable. It made me reflect on my own experiences with our beloved aging dog. The story can bring forth feelings and questions about the unknown afterlife. However, Carlile offers a possible and comforting answer to what may happen after a pet or person dies. This is what makes it a wonderful book to share with children. The picture that the author paints is hopeful and inspiring. Children can see and feel like their pet or loved one will continue to enjoy an active life and be loved beyond the end of their earthly one. The way that Carlile shows Freddy questioning whether his vision was real or a dream touches on the fact that it is common for people to have dreams of their departed loved ones in the first few months after the loss.
I highly recommend this book and rate it a 5 out of 5 due to its flawless editing and universal appeal. Although the author writes in British English, which has different spelling and grammar than American English, the message is still easily understood. Sometimes, it was distracting, but it didn’t subtract from the story’s meaning. The strong word choice and dialogue enhance the writing of a sensitive topic. In addition, the illustrations by Mark Archer are the perfect companion. They help depict Freddy and Biscuit’s experiences and immerse readers in the narrative. There is nothing that I did not like about this book.
