Review of Race Car Kid

"Race Car Kid" by Gregory McNealy is a creative children's story. The story follows the main character, RC, an adopted ten-year-old boy. RC doesn't remember his parents. However, his adoptive parents treat him like their own child. When RC goes to sleep, he wakes up in a brand new world and meets new people. As RC tries to figure out this amazing new place, he finds out that there is an adventure at every turn. RC doesn't just have to figure out the new world; he becomes one of the only people who can save it.
The story does a great job of immersing the reader in a new world. The plot is well thought out and explained throughout the book. If I read anything in the story and had a question about what happened, it seemed to be described in the next couple of sentences. This is a perfect fiction book for young readers who love reading stories about car racing, action, and adventure.
As a middle school English teacher, I believe that the story could be an excellent tool for elementary and middle school teachers to use in the classroom. The main messages of the story are about working as a team, never giving up, no matter how dark things seem, and learning how to face your fears. Also, since the story includes a lot of figurative language, such as similes and idioms, it could be used to introduce new concepts of writing tools to 5th or 6th graders. Additionally, the story does not contain any profanity. The only negative was that a couple of grammatical errors occurred throughout the story.
Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed how creative this story was. It was a perfect mix of action and adventure.
