The Thief and Me by Cathy DesRosiers Peebles is a historical fiction novel that teleports us back to the closing years of the American War of Independence.

Lady Virginia Chapman is tired of waiting for her newly married husband, Lord Norman Chapman, to return home in Stratford upon Avon, England. After almost two years, she has had enough. Jenny decides to take matters into her own hands and go to New York to get a hold of her errant husband. Things go awry when her ship sinks and she finds herself on a raft with Jake Rourke, a man who used to guard a brothel in London. Circumstances lead them to overcome the barriers of their social ranks and form an unlikely alliance. When they are picked up by the Pursuit, a Patriot ship from the colonies, Jenny weaves a web of lies to ensure the survival of Jake and herself.

Will Jake and Jenny be able to reach New York? Why did Norman not return home for so long? Will Jenny be able to reunite with her husband, or will life throw another curveball at her? What roles will Jake and Jenny play in each other's lives? Most importantly, will they be able to carve out a life in the New World?

The Thief and Me is a treat for all history buffs. Though a fictional tale, the book is rooted in history. Prominent historical figures like Cornplanter, Benjamin Franklin, William Franklin, Washington, Agent 355, Hercules Mulligan, Elizabeth Mulligan, and Mary Underhill, among others feature in the story. New York and New Jersey come to life in Peebles' story. The author vividly showcases the political turmoil of the era. We get to see the sides of the Patriots, the retreating British, and the Indians. Peebles shows us how the Indians were stranded amongst their enemies with no help from the retreating British Army. Through Cornplanter and Ahwao's story arc, we get to see how they had to adapt to the changing scenario in the country that was once theirs. My heart went out to them. I have to mention the illustrations. They beautifully captured the scenes of the book. I truly appreciate their inclusion.

Cathy DesRosiers Peebles is a master storyteller. The author completely enmeshes us in the story of Jake and Jenny. The way Jenny, an upperclass British noblewoman, had to adapt to life on the frontiers is portrayed is admirable. Jake aimed to be a free man in the New World. He never expected love. The way he is always there for Jenny despite his inhibitions makes him one of my favorites. In the New World, Jake carved out a niche for himself. His transformation is truly admirable. Caleb and James are great characters. Their arc gives us an insight into the lives of the Black people of that era. Norman, Lady Joan, and Franklin Townset truly believed they deserved everything they desired. Their characters are well-developed. Martin Johnston is one of the most complicated characters. I still do not know whether to like or dislike him. This is a testament to the author's writing prowess.

I was glad to see the characters from the previous novel play important roles in the story. Julia Rainsford and Ki were living a happy life on their farm with their children. Robby, Kane, Samuel, Megan, Molly, Mia, and Willie, among others, were all busy carving out a life for themselves in the New World. I love how we get to know more about Mia's heartbreaking past. It made me root for her and Caleb more. The Seneca Ahwao and the Irish Robby had a beautiful arc. In the beginning, both were prejudiced against each other. Yet, fate brought them together. Ahwao is one of my favorite characters. I love how she did not shatter even when others grossly mistreated her.

Cathy DesRosiers Peebles’ The Thief and Me is a highly enjoyable novel. I absolutely loved this action-packed historical romance. There is nothing that I dislike about this book. Hence, I happily rate The Thief and Me 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this novel to fans of historical fiction books. Readers who enjoy romance, action, and adventure stories will love Cathy DesRosiers Peebles’ novel.

Ma cher, this review done convinced me that The Thief and Me is surely a good read! Historical fiction set during the American War of Independence? It's got me intrigued, cher. The inclusion of real historical figures and vivid depictions of New York and New Jersey got me even more excited. And the characters, like Jenny and Jake, seem like they have depth and complexity. Overall, I reckon this book is worth adding to my reading list! Evocative imagery, painted vivid scenes beautifully.
