Thanks for the review—this book sounds perfect! Set in 1931 colonial Laos, it features a young woman, Geneviève Dubois, on her journey of self-discovery, identity, and belonging.

Genievive seems to be a well built character and her love story seems to be worth reading about. I am wondering why she however had to leave the confines of the orphanage during such difficult times of colonial rule. Congratulations on making a book of the day.

"When the Tamarind Tree Blooms" by Elaine Russell is a captivating historical fiction novel set in 1931 colonial Laos, following Geneviève Dubois, a young woman of French and Lao descent, on a profound journey of self-discovery and identity. Adding it to my reading list. Congrats on BOTD!

Geneviève's journey in When the Tamarind Tree Blooms by Elaine Russell is unforgettable. Her resilience, especially in her bond with Bounmy and her search for family, makes the rich backdrop of 1931 Laos even more vivid. I must say that I truly loved reading this book.

Unfortunately, I will have to pass this book, because everything about it goes against my tastes in reading materials. Starting with the fact that it sounds more like biography and memoir, which I dislike most among all genres, it also has inklings of inspiration, self-discovery and motivational literature that aren't my forte as well. Apologies and still congratulations on BOTD!
