If they were slave traders they probably had that hex coming...
But it's an intriguing premise for a historical fiction novel! And I've always been interested in the paranormal.
Thank you for your fantastic review.

The voodoo, the ghosts, the inhumane treatment of slaves, and the human suffering are already the topics that attract the reader's attention; however the vivid and realistic potrayal of these things make it even more enticing. It will be interesting to read this book. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!

From the cover, this would not be a book that grabs my attention; fortunately, this was an amazing review. Maddie Montague has lived under her father's protective wing since her mother died. As her birthday approaches, she will discover a curse against her family that could explain why her life is that way.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed review! It’s clear you truly immersed yourself in The Satin Moth. From the African village and Eastlyn Castle to the artful depiction of the character interactions. I want to thank you in particular for noticing the emotional intricacies of narrative like the heart-wrenching poem about grief and the messy reality of Bubble’s and Squeak’s muddy paws.
You also touched on the book’s darker themes—voodoo, slavery, and human suffering , with sensitivity. Your note about the balanced portrayal of beliefs (without preaching) is especially helpful for potential readers.
Thanks for the heads-up about mature content, too. It’s clear this book leaves a lasting impact.

Wow, thank you ever so much for such a reflective and emotional review of *The Satin Moth*! I'm truly moved by how closely you related to the story and the characters. That the poem about grief touched on your own experience means a great deal to me—that's precisely why I wrote it, in the hope that it might be some comfort or recognition to someone who knew.

I especially love that you included both the beauty and the hurt in the tale—the voodoo, slavery's harsh realities, and the spiritual elements were difficult to write but crucial to make honest. And yes, Bubble's and Squeak's filthy paws were most certainly inspired by real-world bedlam!

Thank you again for finding the time to share your thoughts—and for the 5 stars! I'm so glad you enjoyed the ride.

The Satin Moth
by Jennie Dodd is a captivating generational novel that weaves together themes of family curses, historical shadows, and the redemptive power of truth. The story explores the consequences of the past while emphasizing humanity's inherent equality. It also highlights environmental conservation and gender equality through its vivid descriptions of nature and its strong, resourceful female protagonists

The story of Maddie and the 300-year-old curse on the Montague family sounds really interesting. I'm curious to know what the curse is and how she plans to break it. The mix of mystery, history, and voodoo makes this gripping. Congrats on BOTD!

Will Maddie, the daughter of the 10th Lord of Eastlyn, be able to break the 300-year-old curse that haunts the family? Reading "The Satin Moth" by Jennie Dodd will answer that question. The curse involves subjects of slavery, voodoo and ghosts. Those interested in such fiction should certainly enjoy this novel. Thanks for an engaging review that provides valuable insights into this intriguing story.

Today's BOTD follows the legacy of a family cursed due to their wealth built on the 16th and 17th-century slave trade. The story combines the present-day Montague family’s struggle with a voodoo hex and the brutal past of their ancestor, George Montague, a cruel slave trader, while focusing on the family’s quest to break free from the curse. Your review was so helpful...thank you so much! :-)

Great review. The Satin Moth a story about a generational curse that can only be broken by Maddie. A historical fiction involving voodoo and ghosts make the story mysterious and at the same time intriguing.

Human suffering, especially arising from slavery, was and remains a painful experience and hence I am happy that the author did not shy away from such a realistic and believable depiction of the same. I am wondering what Maddie's role is in bringing the 300-year-old curse to an end.
Many thanks for the review, @Bertha Jackson.
