This sounds like a captivating book. It’s one of the many parts of history that we aren’t taught in school, at least in the American curriculum that I remember (or have heard about), and it’s an injustice in and of itself that we don’t. I would love to read about Sister B actively working to overcome racial injustice not just for herself but for African Americans overall. Akio’s situation has also caught my attention. It’s terrible that Akio not only suffered racial injustice in America but also unwittingly contributed to Pearl Harbor just because he was asked to take pictures. Thank you for the helpful review.

I find the story of Sister B inspiring because she decides to live the oppressive and racial South and move to Portland to try and improve herself economically. Thanks for the great review.

It seems to look into racial discrimination from different lenses across the globe. Congratulations on Book of the Day!

It's sad that racism is still very much present today, like a leech we can't be rid of. I commend the sacrifices of sister B but she leaving her child behind triggers some alarm in my mind. Looking forward to know why as I delve into the story.
Nice review and congrats to the author.

The incriminations and injustices committed in world against people of color still holds true and Sister B's struggles to fight with is indeed inspiring and heroic. I would like reading the book. Thanks for the review!

Sister B's story is an inspiration many African Americans. Like her, Akio also faced racial discrimination while living in the USA. It must be tough living in a place where you don't quite fit but still try to make a difference. Congratulations on the BOTD.

In our generation, it is most difficult to find people or ladies like Sister B, who has the desire for the family affairs.

I would like to read this book and know how Sister B was able to rise amidst all the challenges of her time. She made important move to the North and did all she could and also contributed to her society. That's a kind of woman I like. Congratulations to the author.

The life experiences of the author's grandmother with elements such as the history of Oregon, and also some details about Pearl Harbor attack could provide some good knowledge to the readers. Thank you for the review!

The racial background in this book seems a bit harsh at that time. Sister B tried to minimize it. I like this story. She deals with problems in good ways. The reviews are very good.
