Real life underpinnings can be found in the historical story book "The Shanghai Circle" by Tony Henderson. The book portrays triads dealing drugs, running clubs, and making money from prostitutes.
life is only knowing the unknown, we can do this by reading books easily- Online book club is a great place for this. This is what I believe.

That's an excellent review of a very well written book. The writer describes characters and settings amazingly well. As I read I felt the scenes playing in my mind and the characters come to life.

The gruesome murder, the cool and sophisticated business woman Davina, her 'shallow' friend and the tragic story of Irvina.... This story seems to be very promising and I'm curious to learn about life in pre-war China.

I loved the rich traditional setting, intense conflicts, and complex characters. I would love to know how Joseph, Davina, and Irina navigate this dangerous world and what their futures hold. It sounds interesting. Congrats on being BOTD!

History, politics, and powerful dark gangs are heavy themes in one book. Looks exciting to read since the narrative is nothing but a thrill and suspense, this is one of my favorites. The author wrote in a good style.
The review is well done.

“The characters in 'The Shanghai Circle' are not the good or the bad, they're kind of complex people with their own motivations. The moral ambiguity of the story meant there was more to the story and I thought it, I questioned what I knew of right and wrong.

Thanks for a good review with so many details. Seems like a Political / business power drama set in the olden times . This is not a genre I would pock up, but the book sounds well written with a great deal of time spent on the details of the settings and environment in that era. This is very important culture wise and to give the readers a feel of each character and emotion.

!930's in Shanghai, Nazi's gaining power, Japan threatening other countries, and all the history and nastiness of that time in history. Sounds like an intriguing story full of murder and not so nice things. Part one of a series, so some detailed world building, fascinating character building, and other interesting things. This is on my to read list. Enjoyed your review.

"The Shanghai Circle" by Tony Henderson is a book that begins with the events in Shanghai during 1936. The Triads had considerable influence in such circumstances and Cheung Pak-ho is at the head of one. The book is very realistic and with fantastic details.
