This was a very insightful review! I appreciate how you highlighted the book’s balance between fiction and historical accuracy. The way the novel intertwines music, philosophy, religion, and politics makes it sound like a rich and immersive read. I also find it fascinating that Filippo was inspired by an unsent letter from Beatrice to Dante—what a compelling premise! Your mention of the platonic love theme was particularly interesting; it’s rare to see stories that focus on deep emotional connections rather than physical attraction. However, I can understand how the heavy use of musical jargon might be a challenge for some readers. Thanks for the detailed analysis! Your review really helps in deciding whether this book is a good fit for one’s tastes.

The plot based on music is really interesting. Filippo seems super talented, and I would love to read about his "dramma per musica".

The writer Inspired, embarks on creating an early opera, crossing paths with historical figures like Giulio Caccini and Vincenzo Galilei. The novel blends music, philosophy, and politics, exploring themes of love, artistic passion, and the birth of opera in Renaissance Italy

Excellent review that touches the major areas of interest addressed in the book as well as those deemed most useful by readers trying to decide on a book to read. Granted it probably will only appeal to that small niche audience that hits all of the areas -- the de Medici era of history and all of it's quirks, the Renaissance of the music era and the development of music that is covered in enough detail that perhaps only a professional musician could appreciate the research that went into that section of the book, and perhaps the readers of Dante might even be tempted to investigate the story of the letter that was never sent and platonic love.
As for me, I love that era of history however I will have to pass on this book because of all the niche eras it touches, it does not touch mine - easily read and touching more of those important issues of the time, tying them together to allow them to be part of the story... providing the background for the development of the story.
Though the principal focus of the story was music, it also touched important issues of the time, philosophy, religion and politics.

An amazing recommendation for anyone interested in classical music, poetry, and history. From your review, the plot and the concept of platonic love could be appealing. I read the sample. And I don't really enjoy it because I'm unfamiliar with the complex language and musical terms. The exploration of Italian history and culture makes this book very well researched. Thank you for your informative review.

Thank you for the well written review of "purgatorio" by bernard kuckuck. I would like to know more about the concept of platonic love between Dante and Beatrice. Congratulations on being BOTD!

Honest, cohesive review. Creating a musical story around a far time of history, which is a mystery to alot of readers is good idea. Maybe not my favourite, but with the poems and the other elements, it sure will appeal to many. Congrats on BOTD

Like always with stories that involve actual historical figures, I am interested to know if the book is based on facts or is more fictional by nature? It is important for me to understand for sure -- do I read documentary accord or the story created by authors imagination.

Music is something I enjoy, but this time period isn't. This sounds too historical for me. Thanks for the information, though.

'Official Review: Purgatorio' by Bernard Kuckuck presents the relevant scenes of the book. This is the story of a young music student, Filippo Oraiosieri, under Maestro Lorenzo Stamezzo. The principal focus of the historical story is music. It touches on the important issues of the time, philosophy, religion, and politics. Also, it contains beautiful and original poems by the author. Learning that the author's work was well-researched was great!

A book that focuses on the musical scene of 16th century Florence is my cup of coffee.

Thank you for the great review.

This sounds like an interesting book however the spelling variation of the names would confuse anyone, and have you questioning your self as to whether you read it correctly. Thanks for the detailed review.

"Purgatorio" by Bernard Kuckuck is a historical novel set in the backdrop of Florence, Italy in the late 16th century. The story touches on the important matters of philosophy, religion and politics through well-rounded characters. The story also explores the power of true love that transcends physical attraction, with poetic and musical highlights.
"Purgatorio" will appeal to people who are fascinated with history and musically inclined.

I am afraid this book is not for me due to the anount of unrecognisable names and terms this book has. It also covers pretty niche topics like 16th century Italy and art during that period.
I write the best reviews possible. :idea2:
