Surrendering Love's Sins by Tess Lynne

Post by sapphire31 »

The story depicts the continuing saga of what seems to be an unending battle between two supernatural forces, the good and evil, the unfinished clashes of authority and supernatural powers of two clans, the Anders and the Constitine.

Kerriana’s childhood was a memory of pure cruelty and misery under the clutches of her own grandmother, a matriarch tyrant who lived on the belief that Mary was a ‘sin eater’, born to prey on the sins of others. This strongly-imposed-to-her belief became the major source of Mary’s agony as she was constantly subjected to a rigid and desperate training aimed to harness her supernatural ability. It was only after the death of her granny and she was eighteen that Mary dwelt on the fact that she had gained her freedom at last, only to realize later that it was just for a moment as another door of mystery opened up. As fate finally takes its course and make its silent introduction to Drake, the real leader of 'sin eaters' who had been suffering from the curse spelled by Kerriana’s ancestor. With the quiet encounter of the two leading characters which later developed into a passionate relationship instead of the expected battle of generations that had long threatened the existence of each other, together, Drake and Kerriana uncover the mystery that was long hidden from Kerriana by her grandmother.

As love took its final course, an element of passion more strong than any supernatural power, together Drake and Kerriana faces the real evil hidden behind the facade of goodness and friendship. But will they survive to outlive the horror of the real evil? How can love abound in the midst of so many conflicts, mysteries and generation gap? Is love enough to conquer a thousand year of family feud and differences to break a curse that had long binded and enslaved their families into agony and fear?

Social/Historical Context

A chronicle of evil and curses, Surrendering Love’s Sins went back a thousand years before when Drake Constitine, a prominent wealthy businessman refused to give in to the whim and scheme of a selfish, spoiled brat young witch who cursed him and his whole clan, making them suffer. Through all those years, every one of Drake’s tribe preys on other people sins and wickedness and hence they’re called ‘sin eaters’. Added to their miseries were the ‘hunters’, a group who assigned themselves to hunt and torture every ‘sin eater’ before finally killing them. Only the death of the last of her line will Drake and his tribe be freed from the curse which binds not only him to suffer but also the girl of his life.

The gap in years always caused a rise in an eyebrow in almost every culture. Placing a nine hundred and eighty-two- year age gap between the two lead roles in the story, seem somehow impractical even after the curse was lifted. However, the author managed to create a logical maneuvering at the end of the story to justify what seemed to be illogical. With this, she managed to integrate social and historical elements in the story without being biased to society and culture.

Writing Style

It's so absorbing! I just can't wait to finish reading it in just one sitting. Normally, this kind of plot won't cater to my interest but I was indeed surprised to find myself enjoying it tremendously. In fact, it captivated me even before I realized where the story is actually leading me. I was so engrossed with the vividness of the details and simplicity of the author's arrangement of facts that I failed to recognize the twist in the story. I am giving it a rate of 4!

My Thoughts

I’m not a fan of Count Dracula, vampires, werewolves and the like nor am I an avid reader of horror stories but when I read on the title of the book, Surrendering Love’s Sins, I thought it was an intense passion kind of love story and romance. However, when I reached the part where the mystery started to unfold, I had no choice but to go on reading. Only then I realized how amazing an author’s mind could be.

Ms. Lynne could have been more intense with the details, particularly with the choice of words since it could cater to the matured readers but I can see that she maintained a rather simple and wholesome image as a writer creating a passionate yet mild, sweet and gentle romance for the lead characters.
