Review: The House of Closed Doors by Jane Steen

Post by MaiMay516 »

This is my review of the book and I would love to hear what others thought about this book.
When I first started reading this book, I felt that the character was flat, with no emotions. The book was going nowhere and fast. At the urge of my own will I keep pushing through and to my surprise it got much better. Around the time she reaches the farm Is about the time that you say this book could be worth reading. The chores of the ladies and the stories being told had great depth. Even the main character, Nell, began to be likable and deep. She even had a feeling about her, that you felt emotions for her. There was a lot of repeating imagery words and there usage became boring, however the farm was most intriguing to me. The murder didn't add a lot to the story, it was more just a hit and miss type thing. I would have loved for more to happen before her child was born, to add some meat to this story. Some elaboration of the farm itself and its daily activities would have added to this story tremendously. The ending was my least favorite part, not only was it quick to end and slow to read but it was boring, unresolved and left you feeling empty. The story could be relatable, and the actions added some depth but not nearly what I prefer in a book.

I would love to hear what others who have read this thought!
