Review of The Tainted Jade
In The Tainted Jade by Richard Blaine, nothing is as it seems.
Michael Garrett, a private detective, has a penchant for getting himself in trouble. This time, trouble comes knocking on his door in the form of a well-dressed man with an odd request: "I want you to be me."
Taking the train down to El Paso to fulfill his client's request, he finds him dead in his hotel room with a knife in his hand and a lady staring at him in shock. As the story spirals out of control and the variables keep changing, Garrett must figure out how two jade statues, an ancient curse, and a bitter rivalry add up to four dead bodies and multiple death threats. He has to stop the killer in time before things get worse.
This book has the same feel as an old murder mystery movie. I can almost see the plumes of smoke coming out from the detective's cigarettes as he spoke. The scenes are vivid, even though the author does not go overboard with his descriptions. They are easy to picture. The book flows smoothly, adding to that feeling of watching a movie.
The main character's perceptiveness is obvious from the start. Because the story is told from his perspective, we are privy to all his actions and decisions. Yet, the author manages to pack so many surprises into this book. The book stimulates the reader's mind. Yet, it isn't exhausting because the author doesn't add twists and turns just for the sake of it. The truth can be staring the reader right in the face, but they won't know.
Nothing was as it seemed; everybody seemed to be playing a game or getting played by someone else. It seemed nobody was winning except death, with bodies piling up alarmingly and the threat of more deaths around the corner. I found it interesting how Monica Wearing went from sophisticated and deadly to a poor, frightened woman. A similar drastic change happened in James, as he slowly changed from the wild, irresponsible playboy to something else, something more chilling.
I enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the other books by the author featuring the main character. There was nothing I disliked, and the book was exceptionally edited. Therefore, I'd rate it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to people who love small-town murder mysteries.
