I didn't truly understand the harsh effect of war until I came across, S. L. Roman's historical fiction book, One Year, One Night. The book followed the 16-year-old Annie, who, being reserved, was able to capture the seasons of her family's life that mattered most to her. Having returned to Millside, her personal experience of what it means for a lovely family to live in a war zone area would soon catch up with her. With Auntie Betty's continual drama and Peg's emotional mistakes, we would soon find out the inevitable effect of war on us all.

I followed through with the emotional rollercoaster of reading Roman's book. It's true that wars have their negative effects, but we can't deny that they, in most cases, are necessary evils. Annie's dad is a beautiful demonstration of this. One thing I loved about this book was that it didn't just keep the reader in the dark suspense of war, rather we are offered an opportunity to enjoy the glimpses of what love means. You'll meet Annie's relationship with Remy, and you'll be forced to compare it with Peg's relationship with Andrew. You may want to judge between the two. This feature in the book calmed my nerves.

Also, following Annie's dairy was interesting. The reader may be wondering about the actual essence of the dairy in the book, but it gives a broader perspective to the book. However, due to the rich content of the book, I would encourage an improvement on the cover page of the book. It just has a cover page that gives the impression that it's a children's book. Aside from this, nothing else was my concern. There were no errors in the book.

If you enjoy historical fiction, especially those on German invasions, then this book is for you. Women, fathers, and children were all brutal victims of such wars, and you may want to find out the depth of this fact. Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted a star due to the negative factor I mentioned.
