Review of Hemingway's Goblet
Hemingway’s Goblet by talented Dermot Ross is a fascinating debut novel blending historical fiction, adventure, psychological thriller, mystery, and romance. The story unfolds in London, England. We meet Nick Harrieson, a highly popular law professor at London King’s University. Unexpectedly, Nick had to stand down from teaching following a sexual harassment complaint against him. Visiting his sister, Nick noticed a silver goblet on the mantelpiece. The goblet bore a mysterious inscription, and Nick remembered that it had come from his grandfather. On a whim, Nick traveled to his aunt in New Zealand, who kept her father’s diaries, to learn more about his grandfather and the goblet. What will Nick discover? How will the disciplinary hearing impact Nick’s teaching career?
This novel is of amazingly high quality, which is unusual for a debut. The unique storyline, the awesome intrigue, the perfectly balanced suspense, the sophisticated characters, the psychological depth, and the exhilarating travel adventures kept me turning pages. I enjoyed the atmospheric settings of London and Spain. But most of all, I liked the ending because it tied all loose ends, kept the door open for a sequel, and left me to wish for more. Any chance for a sequel, Dermot? I would love to read how Nick’s reunion with Adrienne in Seoul will go, whether Adrienne will break her engagement, whether Nick will publish the novel Adrienne suggested, and whether the novel will be filmed.
All in all, I enjoyed every aspect of this fascinating story, and I found nothing to dislike. I am not a Hemingway fan, but Hemingway’s Goblet instantly made me a fan of Dermot Ross! It is a perfect read—masterfully composed, perfectly written, and thoroughly edited. So, I happily rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I highly recommend this remarkable novel to historical fiction, adventure, psychological thriller, and romance fans.
