[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of ""The Pig Farmer's Wife"" by LaVonne Misner.]
"The Pig Farmer's Wife" by LaVonne Misner is a historical fictional story that details the plight of women and the discrimination they face. It also tells the story of a woman named Gertrude, from her birth in 1931, and the tragedies she faced that transformed her life. After losing her parents in a fire, Gertrude realizes suddenly that she is all alone, and from that moment on, her life is no longer the same. Due to the discriminatory laws at that time, she had to get married to a farmer to be able to get the insurance money for the store. Her marriage to George changes the course of her destiny and puts her in a life she had never imagined or wanted.
Gertrude is the Pig Farmer's Wife, and she is one woman who, despite the misfortunes she suffered in life, showed so much strength and determination that was infectious to those that she met. The story in this book revolves around several themes like family, loss, death, discrimination, gender inequality, and war. It also details the discrimination that was prevalent against women during that period, from not being able to get a loan from a bank to other societal norms that made the role of women just housewives and mothers only.
My favorite character in the book is Gertrude. What I love most about her is her strength. Even when faced with a dilemma that would have crumbled most people, Gertrude takes her destiny into her own hands, makes something out of her life, and prospers instead of actually crumbling.
I had a great time reading the book; it was funny and also an eye-opener. I learned a lot from this book, and the book also showed the danger of misconceptions and incomplete information. I found nothing to dislike about the book. It was well arranged, and I did not notice any typographical errors, which means the book is excellently edited. I commend the editor for such an exceptional job as well as the author for crafting such a great story with such deep meanings.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because it is well-written. The storyline was good; the characters all played their roles well and gave the book such a rich and interesting narrative. I highly recommend this book to girls, mothers, women, and men everywhere. Women should be treated equally as men and not less just because of their gender.
