Growing up in Ireland with her grandmother, Betha, had been a comforting moment for Aileen until she stumbled upon the likes of Joseph Ryan, who would not stand rejection. As a strong Catholic girl, she prayed with her rosary daily, not only as a part of tradition but for her father, Thomas, who crossed the Atlantic to America in search of her half-siblings. Molly and Michael were kidnapped at the docks and sold into slavery to a captain sailing for America over the Atlantic. Joseph seemed hell-bent on making her his property and would go to any length to have what he desired. He strutted and spoke with pride when addressing Aileen, confident in his plans with Father Murphy of St. Brigid Church. Betha encouraged Aileen to cross the Atlantic and secretly planned her escape to America from Ryan's hold in search of her father and half-siblings, Molly and Michael. Follow Aileen on this journey to discovery for an adventurous experience into a renowned time of slavery in America in Dreams of Freedom by Marilyn Higgins.

This historical fiction novel was a real page-turner—I was absorbed in the story and could not wait to unveil the next scene, especially regarding her search for Molly. The tension is palpable and provokes emotions in the reader that resonate with the disposition of the characters at every moment. I enjoyed the satisfying amount of suspense incorporated into this book; it made for an exciting and engaging reading experience—it kept me glued to the end. The descriptions are detail-oriented and stirred my imagination to life, which gave me the feeling of being present in the time and place described.

I dislike nothing about this book and love how the author wove such a disheartening time in history with a blend of romance, betrayal, trust, pain, tragedy, and adventure. The likes of Betha, Aileen's grandmother; Jimmy; Rose; Sara; and Aileen herself possessed admirable qualities that got them through insufferable moments. A strong-willed spirit and the ability to see through pain were common attributes possessed by these characters, each with a unique sense of purpose. The third-person point of view narrative in this book is another aspect I appreciate because I felt strongly connected to the characters and fully immersed in their world.

Fans of historical fiction would enjoy this narrative; therefore, I recommend it to them.

I rate this book five out of five stars because of its engrossing plot and because I found nothing to dislike about this book. Another round of editing would correct the errors I stumbled upon while reading, which are not enough to deduct a star for.

I think the author went into great care to write such a good book. I am glad that it impressed you, and your glowing review is the proof that this is good book to add to your shelf. Amazing job. Keep it up.
