Review of The Peacock's Heritage

The Peacock's Heritage by Sasha M. Stevens describes Brigid's life. The story is set in Ireland, beginning in 1836. The first chapter describes Brigid’s family dynamics and her early experiences. Her mother passes early. Her mother’s death means that, as the eldest daughter of the family, the duties and responsibilities of the household now rest on her shoulders at a tender age. Brigid and her siblings now have only each other to rely on. Their father’s drinking habit further exacerbates their already strained financial situation after their mother’s passing. Regardless, they do everything in their power to survive.
The first few chapters describe the childhood of Brigid then advances to a few months. Overall, the story begins slowly and gradually increases in pace. The main themes revolve around family, betrayal, the challenges of finding and maintaining friendship, romance, and a touch of patriotism.
This book can be read in a single sitting if leisure time is available. I liked the resilience and bravery that young Brigid demonstrated from her early years up to adulthood. In some parts of the story, Brigid’s resolve weakens, which leaves a bitter aftertaste while reading. However, I do not dislike these moments. They reveal that Brigid has flaws, which makes her more relatable to readers.
The plot has some predictable events, as the author adds clues and subtleties before certain outcomes or consequences are revealed. The plots and twists of the story are not that intense, just right for light readers.
There is nothing in this book that I dislike; therefore, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I would have rated it higher, but I felt the ending came too quickly, and some questions remain unanswered. I have also discovered that the book needs editing work, mostly to fix the opening and closing quotations of the conversations. I recommend this book to readers looking for a romance story with a hint of historical fiction.
