His Sister’s Pride
The day Emily took her own life. Emily, a 16-year-old girl whose life was perfect until she got into high school where students used to bully her. Before high school Emily's life was perfect. She had a twin, Ethan. They both were best friends. He was Emily's support system. The person who used to help her when she would get in trouble. They used to share everything with each other. Emily also told him that she was facing some problems in high school and that the students were bullying her. Ethan wanted to help her but Emily told him to focus on his studies and let her handle. Ethan wrote something for her. Something he thought might help her from what she is going through. He went to her room and he found her hanging from the fan. Ethan started shouting and started crying. He lost a part of himself. He lost his twin. He lost his best friend. He lost his everything.
For the next few days, Ethan used to spend all of his time in Emily’s room. He used to feel her presence there. He used to feel like she’s right here with him. He used to sleep there. One night, he was laying on her bed and he started to have a headache. He started looking for medicine in Emily’s drawers but instead he found an envelope for him.
In that envelope there was letter for Ethan. He started shaking. He then read the letter.
“Hey buddy. I know what I did was wrong but I couldn’t help it anymore. I am sorry for what I did to you. I know you miss me but don’t worry I am right here. All I wanted to say was that You be Strong, you be mom and dad’s pride. Don’t be weak. Be brave. Be strong. Become a writer because that’s what you and I wanted. Because you are the best writer. Do that for me. You are my pride. My twin. My brother. My other half. I love you Ethan.
Yours Emi”
Ethan’s tears were all over that letter. Ethan laid down crying. But after a few minutes, he got up, he went to his room to grab his diary and his laptop. He started writing. He teared a lot of pages. He deleted a lot of pages, a lot of lines. He started shedding tears and then he heard Emily’s voice saying that “You can do it Eth; I believe in you. You are my pride. You can and you will do it.”
After about an hour and half Ethan finished writing. He printed his writing and he could hear Emily saying “I knew you could do it.” Ethan smiled and headed to bed.
The next day his and Emily’s high-school had arranged a little memorial assembly for Emily and Ethan decided to read out what he wrote. Ethan saw Emily’s locker was all decorated and had lots of stuff in it. Students used to leave gifts, flowers, candles and notes in Emily’s locker. Everybody gathered in the assembly hall and everyone who was passing near from Ethan was giving their condolences. After everybody was seated the headmistress asked Ethan to come up and say something. Ethan took out the paper and said “This is something I wrote for Emily before she... Umm...*clearing his throat*
“I don’t know what you are going through Emi but I wanted to tell you that I am here for you and will always be you are my pride, my best friend, a part of me, I know when you are hurt and when you are not. I just wanted to let you know that you are loved and thank you for being a really great sister.”
“Now this is something I wrote for everybody. The ones that are going through tough times or those who don’t have anybody. This is for you”
“You are needed and your passion, your heart, your mind, your creativity, your compassion and your empathy. Be optimistic. Think great things are coming. No matter what you’re currently going through, think there's so much to look forward to. There are still so many laughs and nights and days and risks worth taking and road trips and books to read and poetry to write and pictures to take. You have to believe this. Please. You are so hard on yourself. Take a moment. Sit back. Marvel at your life:
At the grief that softened you,
At the heartache that wizened you,
At the suffering that strengthened you,
Despite everything, you still grow. Be proud of this. People are going to tell you things that will shift your energy for the rest of your life. One person will tell you; you are ugly, and you will believe. You will only hear that voice. No matter how many you-are-so-beautiful's you get after that. We are all born so beautiful. The greatest tragedy is being convinced we are not. This is when you’re allowed to draw your gun and go to war. No matter how long it takes, find the voice that does not serve you and kill it. I want you to be strong. Be mean as a bitch. Sweet as a candy. Cold as ice. Evil as hell or loyal like a soldier. But be something to prove and defend yourself. Be firm about your choice right now. Don’t go backwards to habits and situations that weren't helping you evolve. Allow yourself to grow.
It is okay if it takes a while to get through all of this. It is okay if it takes a while for your story to start, to make sense because this is very nature of mountain never climbed: it is never easy to get over it but it gets possible with time. You are Needed. You belong here. You are strong. You are here on a purpose, for a purpose. So do your best to lean into wisdom. Take with you, your wise counsel and take action- whenever and however you can. That’s that is required of you then, trust the goodness of life to bring the victory. There’s a change coming and even in the messy your presence matters and at last be somebody’s pride, your sister’s pride, your mother’s pride, your father’s pride or even be your own pride. I am my sister’s pride. Thank You”
Everybody stood up and started clapping for Ethan. Ethan felt really relieved and really good. He could see Emily standing in the hall clapping for him and shouting that “That’s My Pride. That’s my brother. That’s My Ethan”.
THE END
