Nyakyusa society is a multilinear society, where children inherit from their mothers, names to girls starts with Sa like sa-mbonga means daughter of Mbonga, while names to boys begins with Mwa-kila means son of Kila.
This culture is lost currently because of education and intermarriage between Nyakyusa and other tribes across Tanzania and outside the countries. Although the clans nouns are still having that structure.
Most of their names based on events, for example Alinanuswe " he was with us (God)" Tupokigwe " We are saved" and so on. Some are nouns derived from verbs like Lusekelo "happiness" derived from seka " laugh" sekela " laugh for or be happy for"
