Sheltering Books donations--donate your books here!

Post by zeldas_lullaby »

I wanted to tell everyone about a charity that I've been donating to for a while. It's called Sheltering Books, at shelteringbooks.org, and it's run by a young woman named Mackenzie who started it when she was a teenager. She's down somewhere in Atlanta, I think, or thereabouts. She takes book donations and distributes them to local hospitals, homeless shelters, residential facilities, etc. I'm not much of a fundraiser, but if everyone who reads this sends two books, then that would rock. (Her address and donation info are on her site.) I think she takes books for all ages/genres, and she recommends that you ship via Media Mail so you're not spending money unnecessarily. I currently have a huge cardboard box filled with donations, so let's see how far we can take it! Does anyone feel inspired to sift through their collection and unload what you don't really want anymore? Or to donate a second copy of a favorite book? If you do, then list it here, and we can see how much we've put together. I'll start: I think I have around 15-20 different paperbacks ready to go out.

Thanks for the heads up! I don't have any books to send from way over here, but I will pass along the word to my family over in AL, just in case they want to help. They're always doing stuff like that.

Thanks for appreciating my post! Wow, yeah, I bet it would cost a fortune to donate books from Japan. With the high rates, it costs a fortune for Media Mail from here to Sheltering Books, and I'm only a few states away.

That's the USPS for you. I mailed a book to someone recently via Media Mail, and according to the tracking, it's officially lost in... a warehouse somewhere, from what I gather, and it still lists its expected arrival date as January 3rd. I don't see that happening at this point, unless they mean January 3rd of 2016. Hey, you never know.

No! Can you believe that? It's probably officially "Lost in the mail." The tracking still says the same thing. And it was for a contest I entered, but fortunately the deadline is a few months in the future. I'm just going to find/buy another copy of my book and send it via Priority!

Thank goodness they offer tracking for Media Mail these days. I'd be all paranoid that they received my book and weren't telling me, or something! Hey, I like your squirrel. He's very noble.
