First of all, I have to say I love Republic stuff. But the worst movie I ever saw was "Yentil" directed, produced, written and acted by Barbara Streisand. The plot is a about a young women who dresses as a man so she can be near the boy she loves. He is studying to become a rabbi in an all male college . I doubt any studio would have allowed it to get beyond the pitch if Steisand's name was not associated with it.

I agree. Republic had some of the best special effects for that era, and the best action movies. Rocketman, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and the best serial of all, Captain Marvel. I saw Yentil, I wasnt that impressed with it. I dont even remember much about it except it was kind of blah, not much to it.

One I watched last night was among the worst. They Came From Beyond Space was the name of it. Interesting storyline, but everything else about it was dumb, dumb, dumb. It looked like they made it up as they went along and threw everything in it except the kitchen sink. A couple of the actors were fairly decent, but the rest were, the only word I can think of is crap. The heroine had big puffy hair and was skinny as a toothpick. She looked like a walking feather duster. It starts out out about these rocks from space that land on a farm, and these entities inside them take over peoples minds. They call this one scientist to investigate, but he is all crippled up from a car wreck. His doctor forbids him to go but of course he goes to the site anyway. Hes involved in phony fight scenes, jumping over fences and all kinds of athletics. Not bad for a crippled up guy. One scene shows an elevator the aliens use to go below the ground, and in the long shots it is silver colored and in the close-ups it is yellow. The final scene has the leader of the aliens saying they are going to take over the Earth and make everyone slaves. Haaaaaa. The hero says dont do that. We are your friends and will help you get back to your own planet. The alien leader says Oh, Ok. Thats where it ends. It should have ended after the credits. With my rating system, I give this one 5 stupids.

I forgive low-budget movies for being bad. Its the big-budget variety that strike me as puerile. The Matrix! Just plain silly. When I was a kid special effects were known as trick photography. I think a movie can be rated inversely by the amount of money spent on this aspect of the production. A similar inverse rating system could be based on other aspects such as: How many times the muzzle of a gun is in centre frame. How big are the petroleum fueled explosions. How long (dull) the car chases are.

I hear you there, TD. Most of those old low-budget turkeys were cheaply made and didnt pretend to be anything more then what they were intended to be. But some of the big block-busters are like you put it, boring. They are all the same, guns that never run out of bullets, cars that look like they have a ton of napalm in them when they explode and have you noticed that a bunch of guys shooting at the hero with assault weapons and machine guns never hit him, and yet he gets them with one shot. Maybe one out of ten are worth watching but the other nine are crap.

My theory for the reason of such bad movies these days, is the use of DRUGS....

Hollywood has lost all creativity....

Same for the theatre and Broadway...no originality, loads of " repeats "...

Suzy, you may be right. I think part of the addiction is money. They have some proven genres that gross fabulous amounts. Hollywood is no more interested in good cinema than the publishing industry is in good literature. If the plot is driven by scenes of confrontations focusing on the use of firearms, then it is just a western without the horses. I do not rule out firearms in good stories, but all to often they are just an excuse to cover up a weak plot. And yes, I hated Clockwork Orange.

I loved "Yentl" both the movie and the short story. I know Barbra gets a lot of stick but there's no denying she has a magnificient singing voice.
