They were the worst when i was growing up, Fran- in the bathroom, circling around the lightbulb, i could barely breathe when i heard their wings flapping, something about them just chills me, my skin just prickles.

LOL poor Mike. I actually really like spiders. We used to have a pet Pink Toed Tarantula. She was very cute with her pink feet and furry. I used to pet her all the time. Plus my grandmother always told me since I was little to never kill a spider so I don't ever.

Anyway back to topic. I am deathly paranoid of Parasites. They are eveywhere and it freaks me the hell out. I refuse to swim in freshwater anymore because freshwater has tons of different parasites. Disgusting!!

Gannon~
I can seeing how getting locked in the bathroom could make you become claustraphobic! Gosh, that was scary.

I've thought about this thread a lot. There are so few truly scary horror movies, and so few truly good horrow movies. I don't mean the "torture porn" garbage that you so often see...I mean really good horrow movies that can do it withouth blood and gore.

The horrow movies that I love: The Shining, Blair Witch, Halloween, all have one thing in common: a sense of isolation. If you read a book like SK's Thinner, what's scary isn't just the fact that this man has a curse put on him and he's becoming emaciated, but that he's alone. No one can help him. It's the same with a movie like The Ring, you have a problem, but you can go to the police, or a family member, but no one can really help you. You're alone in your misery. Even a movie like Seven, which, although pretty gory, is an amazingly scary movie, we get a sense that each of the main characters is isolated in some way.

My friends and I are always trying to come up with an idea for a scary movie or a scary book. It's so hard. It's all been done in many ways, so you have to think of horror in a way that doesn't involve what's already been done. There was a movie we rented called "Burried"....now that was really scary, and it was refreshing in that it was done in a new way....a man buried in a coffin with only a cell phone. How isolating is that?

Hey there MB. Glad to see you mention "The Ring". "The Ring" and "The Ring 2" are two of my favourite horror movies. If you have watched "The Ring 2" on DVD make sure you watch the short film which is also on the dvd. Its about a group of kids who watch the video and for want of a better word "get high" on all the supernatural things that happen to them. Before it gets to the seventh day they hand it on to someone else to watch it therefore avoiding the curse. It is set just before the beginning of the second film. If you like the Ring movies you have to see this short film. Have you seen the original Japanese movies, a friend of mine reckons they are better than our western versions. And yes it was very scary being locked in the toilet. Just reading about the "Buried" movie is freaking me out. :)

Fears stem from many causes. Like say, for myself, the fear of traveling through airplane or boat.

When I was a little kid, I remember being bored and just channel-surfing when I came across the news of the Twin Towers being hit by a hijacked plane and exploding. The news freaked me out a lot so I changed the channel, and I see the Pentagon being hit by a plane too. (nine eleven...*shiver*)

Boats because I can't swim.

Hey Gannon~
No, I've not seen the Ring 2, nor have I seen the orginal Japanese version. Will try to get a hold of them, esp since it's so dreary here in Washington. I think you might like Buried, the acting is pretty good. I'm always trying to think upa better horrow story, sort of the "thinking" man's horror story, one without blood and axes etc. I took my nephew to see Saw IV, (be begged me) and that IMHO, is just shock horror.

MB you have to watch "Ring 2" especially to see the short film on the dvd.
I must admit that I did like the first Saw, because it had a decent story. However after the first one they just went downhill and were exactly what you said "Shock Horror". Each film just seems to be a vehicle to show new and different gory traps.

Exactly Gannon! I felt the same way about the first Saw.
I will get the DVD of the Ring 2. I also liked Roman Polanski's version of Rosemary's Baby...there isn't much like that anymore. Maybe The Omen, or Blair Witch. American Psycho was pretty good, although it didn't need to gore, but I guess it pulls viewers into movie theaters.

Also, the JCO short story collection, Give Me Your Heart, just came via Amazon! I had never heard of this collection, and thanks again for recommending it! Can't wait to sit down and begin.

Did you know MB, I think I am the only person in the world who has not seen "The Blair Witch". I have heard that American Psycho is really good. Hope you enjoy "Give me your Heart" I loved them and they are so short they are easy to reread.

I'm a chicken by nature. I easily get scared by everything. Even if its just an insect or bogeyman or whatsoever.
