He must have had some very bad mental problems, because he shot his mother at home. Then he went to the school and killed the children in her class and six other people. How horrific. There really needs to be some form of gun control but I wonder, in this case, if he would have gotten a gun off the black market anyway. Those parents must be going through hell.

It ticks me off more than anything. It makes one feel like putting that guy through a medieval torture chamber if he hadnt offed himself.

I agree. At least he won't be putting those families through the pain of seeing him in a long drawn out trial that will make them relive it daily. The media s doing a good job of that right now. Now we find out his mother was not a teacher, could have been a substitute which makes me wonder why go after those kids.

The media overdoes it on stuff like that. Its going to drag on for weeks. He might have been on drugs or something or as I saw on one website, violent video games and movies have a lot to do with it too.

They did studies at UCLA. Even very young children are quite able to differentiate between fictional violence and real life. There's no need to ban Tom and Jerry yet! :D

Will never happen, Bighuey. These screwballs have been killing large groups of children on a regular basis from the major massacre of Columbine, which is commonly seen as the start of the revenge killings, right up to this tragedy. If it were rapists or serial killers there would be radical sentencing and laws introduced but with the gun laws, there simply is no political will to tighten them up and why would there be? Republicans depend on a huge amount of gun-toting Americans for their votes and powerful lobby groups donate to said cause, increasing the pressure to support it. The pro-guns side will always say that its mental illness thats the cause of these killings and no politician worth his salt will go against a American on such an ingrained law as his/her right to bear arms as per the Constitution, hence guns will always remain freely available and a source of misery for the families of these victims...

Its very sad though, I wonder how many little children have to be brutally murdered in the name of big politics. The laws in America are completely backwards- you can legally own a gun at 17 (17, practically still a child) and use said gun to go out in a blaze of glory when the popular kids take you off the party invite list. You can also drive a vehicle at 16, an age which is hardly associated with maturity and a lot of showing off and recklessness goes on with teenagers behind the wheel of a car. The cherry on the cake though is you cant touch a drop of alcohol until you are 21.... the mind boggles.

Laws against guns are like laws against narcotics; they generally make things worse. A century ago, if you were in pain, you could just buy opiates. Now law-abiding people in pain have to suffer, while illegal drugs are easily obtained by those willing to ignore the law. A century ago, you could just buy firearms at a gunsmith. Now law-abiding people are defenseless while only the criminals walk around armed. Gun control laws do not stop gangsters and lunatics obtaining firearms.

What they have to do is have the same type of security in schools they have in airports. Body scans, strip searches, that sort of thing. Thats crappy, but with a crappy situation crappy measures will have to be taken. Thats the only way they will be able to screen out the asswipes. Its almost that way now in schools in the bigger cities.

What made me miserable today?

Realizing that the world is going to end on Friday. If it has to be that way, why can't they schedule it for a Monday morning? But no, I have to slog my way through another whole work week, and just as I'm ready to relax for a couple days...........blooey!!

I agree with you there Bighuey. Make everyone go through the screening at school - teachers, students and definitely all visitors. Might be an inconvenience like at airports but if it saves one life it is worth it. All courthouses now have screenings and purses are checked by guards. Unfortunately, it is the way society is now and we have to do this to hopefully be safe. I also agree about the gun laws that they could be tightened. But, I do not think this will stop those that want them. Guns, just like drugs will be obtained illegally. We've forced any mention of God out of the schools and frankly, almost out of society. Well, that invites Satan in with full force. The killing of innocent children is satanic.

There probably isnt an answer. The bad guys are going to do what they do no matter what. All we can do is protect ourselves the best we can.

It still wouldn't stop a suicide killer, would it? If he couldn't get guns, he could have turned himself into a human bomb with ingredients that you can buy openly. If the main entrance had security, he could have gotten in through another door or window. Security measures only stop people who want to kill and then escape. There is no stopping killers who are willing to die themselves.

Sadly, you are right. I didn't know until this afternoon that he blasted the front door to get in. Nothing was stopping this sicko!

Just to change the subject to another sort of hideous crime... Scott (the wise and all-seeing admin) has just unmasked me as a spammer. In the course of 1,600+ posts, I have mentioned my own website twice. Oh! The shame of being caught! Formal Board Warning and all. Next step is being banned.

(Sob...) Do you remember the line from West Side Story: "We ain't no delinquents, we're just misunderstood..." (I know how they felt...)
