Recommended Glue for Repairing Books

I have several old Asterix comics and Tarzan books that have been sitting in my parents' house for over 35 years.
All the pages are present, colors slightly faded, story otherwise complete and readable. However, the spines of several books are dry and cracked and the pages are loose.
I am wondering, what is the best way to fix these books? Can I use some plain old white glue (the same kind children use in school)? Or is there a recommended type of glue for fixing books?
Anybody in these forums work in a print shop or library with experience trying to save old books? I'd really appreciate any and all advice.
