I think I'm becoming a book snob. I've always loved reading, my husband and our children love reading and our house is filled with all kinds of books. I'm finding it more and more challenging to converse with people who openly admit that they don't like to read. How do you respond when you ask someone what book are they reading and they respond that they don't like to read?

I don't find myself making friends with people who dislike reading. I don't automatically dislike people who don't read but I definitely don't go out of my way to be friends with someone who doesn't share my main hobby. I feel like we wouldn't have much else in common, honestly.

craftshley I totally agree. As I meet new people and find out that they are not readers my interest in them diminishes very quickly.

It is definitely something people need to be careful of. We can become snobs/jerks so easily especially when it is something we are good at or really, really enjoy doing. I guess one of the best ways to counteract this eventuality is to remember the wise proverb: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

If you have to interact with someone who doesn't like books (like a coworker or family member) then you try to find some other common ground, if possible. Maybe you and this other person enjoy the same kinds of movies or television shows, for example. However, if you are simply too different to have anything in common, then you just try to be as polite as possible and keep your interaction to a minimum.

Having things in common with other people is important. That said, there are so many other things potentially more damaging to interpersonal relationships. I can think of a few off the top of my head such as personal opinions about politics, religion, music, GMO foods and many more. I find these to be far more derisive in the long run. I guess that if all of your friends shared these same values with you then you might possibly look at reading.

I 'm not attracted to a " non-reader " to begin with, so it's never an issue...( I can tell by their " vocabulary " )

Lots of grunts and the like?

I love to read. I love books. However, I wouldn't consider myself a book snob. I have friends that don't read much. As much as I try to push book recommends on them, I'm not offended if they refuse. I find that people that read more have a very eclectic sense of what is going on, not just issues related to books. So in this sense, I'm not a book snob as much as I am an information hoarder.

I don't think so nor would I like it to be truth. I am not a book snob and dislike snobs from any kind. Most of my acquaintances don't read and some of them are still intelligent.
