Declutter - how do we do this?

I recently painted myself into a corner - and the sad thing was that I didn't even notice that I was doing it. Only when the fist hit me in the face, did I wake up and my blinkers fell off!
I spent a very emotional Thursday running through all the scenarios in my head and fell into bed, completely exhausted. When I woke up on Friday morning I realised that my mind and my life was so cluttered that I could not even see the light.
How the heck did this happen? Well there is no time to sit around and mope and therefore the question.....How do we declutter?
What do you do to declutter?

And how do you declutter your mind? My house is fine - no rummage sale required :).

I used to be pretty bad about this and unable to throw anything away just in case it might be useful someday. Not exactly a hoarder, but getting close to that edge. Now I've gone to the opposite extreme and am trying to live minimalistically. I mean, you can't control whether or not they'll be suddenly destroyed by some accident, you can't take it to the grave, so why cling on to them? I guess you just have to learn to let go. Own stuff, not be owned by them.

mentally? I picture putting all the bad stuff in an imaginary 'sort this when you are emotionally ready' box. No point dealing with stuff during high times of pressure....physical decluttering? NO I like my stuff, I have a cupboard for my stuff....the door doesn't close but everything is precious to me. Hope that helped :)
